It probably took years for the death storms to envelop every corner of the world. We can’t know for sure what it was like. Record keeping was not a priority.  I do know this: there wasn’t time to develop the “heritage rituals” we lump in with the limmers. The knowledge that saved us could not have been new. No way people could experiment with human sacrifice to create wardings, and have experts survive miscalculation and failure when confronted with an actual death storm. That is some seriously dark magic, and in that previous world with its bright sky and breezy access to the countryside, practitioners must have honed their craft in the shadows.  So yes. We have this wonderful technology, introduced 556 years after we needed it. We have our vigilant protectors. And there is unquestionable wickedness and suffering inflicted by the outlaws who dive into forbidden secrets. Still. If our world breaks again, collapsing further, those outlaws may be the only thing between us and extinction.
